About University of Southampton

The University of Southampton is a Russell Group research university on England's south coast, known for engineering, computer science, oceanography and health sciences. Founded in 1862, it has developed into one of the UK's leading research-intensive institutions, consistently ranking in the UK top 20.

Southampton has particular distinction in electronics and computer science — the World Wide Web was largely developed at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee, a Southampton alumnus. The university's Optoelectronics Research Centre is a world leader in fibre optics, and its Ocean and Earth Science department (based at the National Oceanography Centre) is the UK's best for marine science.

For North American students, Southampton offers strong STEM programmes in a coastal city with easy access to London and the New Forest National Park. It represents good value within the Russell Group, with lower living costs than London or the south-east commuter belt.

Campus & Student Life

Southampton's main Highfield Campus is a green, self-contained site about 2 miles from the city centre. The city itself is a port city — it's where the Titanic departed from — with a maritime heritage and growing cultural scene. The nearby New Forest and Isle of Wight provide outdoor recreation. Southampton is less glamorous than some other Russell Group cities, but it offers a genuine, friendly student experience without the tourist-town pressure.
